NHRA Great Darrell Russell Killed: Drove James Dean Dragster at US Nationals
06/28/04
On June 27, 2004, fans and members of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) were devastated by the death of 35-year-old drag racer Darrell Russell. Russell, a native of Hockley, Texas, died during the Top Fuel race at Gateway International Raceway when his car broke up and caught fire.
The fatal accident occurred after Russell had crossed the finish line during the second round of eliminations at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals. Traveling at about 300 mph, Russell deployed his parachute immediately before his car broke apart. Russell was unconscious when he was removed from the wreckage and was pronounced dead two hours later at the St. Louis University Medical Center.
Driver of a dragster owned by NHRA legend Joe Amato, Russell was the event's top qualifier, was currently fourth in the Top Fuel points standings and was coming off a recent victory in Columbus, Ohio. He had made his NHRA Top Fuel debut in 2001, became the third driver in NHRA history to win in his first professional start and was 2001 NHRA rookie of the year. During his four year career he had earned six victories in 17 final rounds and posted a career-best fourth place points finish in 2003.
James Dean fans had the honor of associating with Russell when he drove the James Dean dragster at the U.S. Nationals in August, 2001. A talented driver and a great person, Russell was also an outstanding representative of James Dean?s image. Russell, like Dean, exemplified the attitude ?Dream as if you?ll live forever. Live as if you?ll die today.? Both CMG and James Dean are proud to have worked with Darrell Russell and wish the best to his
